Colourway: The Great Hand
This colourway was first introduced in my 2019 Scottish Myth & Folklore Advent Set as Day 13.
The Great Hand colourway inspiration comes from a rather mysterious reference in ‘The Friends and Foes of Man’ in Wonder Tales From Scottish Myth and Legend by Donald A. Mackenzie, Forgotten Books. It is described as ‘a gigantic gristly hand with nails like an eagle’s claw.’ It is said to be found in caves and tunnels, including the one between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace, and appears to be almost disembodied in the tales, as no one has ever seen any other part but the hand.
Less mysterious references to great hands can be found in many Scottish tales of giants, who seem to like reaching down chimneys to steal people and children away.
